But millennials will soon be old news, and the next few years will be dedicated to understanding the next era of job seekers: Generation Z.
So, who is Generation Z?
Defining an entire generation can be difficult, but Generation Z is generally defined as those born between the mid-1990s and the mid-2000s. Here’s the age ranged for the previous three generations:
- Boomers, born between the mid-1940s and mid-1960s.
- Generation X, born between the mid-1960s and mid-1980s.
- Millennials, born between the mid-1980s and 1990s – 2000s.

Many of today’s job seekers see job-hopping as a necessity – not because this generation is unloyal or itching to leave, but because they like to keep their options open. Today’s generation are carefree and they like to be able to change their mind at the click of a finger. In fact, 68% of Gen-Z workers fear that there might be better options out there.
So how can you earn the loyalty of your Gen-Z employees? 32% of Generation Z want a supervisor role within their company. Their ideal scenario is finding a company that aligns with their needs and values, and finding opportunities to grow and work within that company. Employers will need to invest in their young workers in order to retain their Gen-Z employees.
Job perks aren’t always everything.
We all know that salary and job benefits are an important factor in keeping most staff happy, but not when it comes to Gen-Z. In reality, work relationships, learning and opportunities to grow are all important factors to young people these days. This signals that the workplace culture is becoming one of the most important and alluring aspects to young workers.
Almost 50% of Gen-Z workers stay in their jobs because they enjoy it. They’re also more likely than any other age group to choose their job simply because it’s what they’ve always wanted to do.
Additionally, almost 45% of young professionals in Gen-Z said that their work relationships are what keeps them at their current jobs. This is compared to 25% for workers aged over 35.
What does this mean for hiring young professionals? You’ll need a vibrant, exciting work culture with lots of opportunity for growth. You’ll still need to be prepared for your young workers to have their heads turned, but developing a strong and loyal relationship between boss and employee is a key factor in retaining young professionals – and one that they’ll appreciate.
